IIS teams contributions to the PHP engine

Just read over a nice blog post by Mai-lan (Product Unit Manager for IIS) which summarised the contributions the IIS team have made to the PHP engine and community over the last couple of years. Having used PHP on IIS myself for coming around to 8 years now I can say there has been a tremendous acceleration in the uptake and interest in PHP on IIS.

In the early days PHP on IIS was pretty much a one man show (thanks again Shane Caraveo). Now it is a lot different with a serious and sustained effort being made by the IIS team at Microsoft to bring PHP into the spotlight. This effort is being lead by Pierre Joye on the PHP front and Kanwaljeet Singla from the FastCGI/IIS side (Rick James and Ruslany should also get a mention).

Some of the big ticket items that the IIS team have brought about for the benefit of the IIS/PHP community are;

  • FastCGI released for IIS 5.1, 6 and 7
  • Update of libraries and API's used by PHP and compiled into both 32 and 64 bit binaries using Visual C++ v9.0.
  • URL Rewrite Module for IIS 7

Mai-lan's blog post is worth a read if you get the chance.
