Automatic Update Client does not download & Update
Configuration: SUS server=Windows 2000 Server=member server=SP4. I can do a sync. with Windows Update server, download the catalog as well as updates and approve them to make them available for downloading by clients.
Client Computers=Windows 2000 Pro,DHCP Clients, on SP4,Windows update client SP1. Controlled by GPO.
The problem starts when my clients have to do an update. What happens is that I see a Windows Update notification(Downloading) on my taskbar, it goes as far as 0% and then disappears.

I had a look at C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4 and there is a txt file called iuident.txt and the strings within this file do not point to my SUS server( http://imamba) they instead point to the Microsoft Windows Update Server as per attached ( could this be where the problem is?)

I have also verified my Windows Update GPO settings, they are ok and also my SUS server points client to it for downloads.

That's a good one sibusisom, but unfortunately I have no idea off the top of my head. It would seem like your clients are not going to the correct server, as to why is a different thing althogether. I'll see if I can have a bit of a look around for a possible cause tonight when I get home from work.
Did that work:
If not, I found the following info:
Per Microsoft: "This behavior may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
1)In your computer's Local Area Network (LAN) settings, the Automatically detect settings check box is selected.
2)You cannot ping the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) server by its Domain Name System (DNS) name". See Q824208 for more information.Q830750 gives information related to this Event ID for Windows Server 2003.
Also check Q328010 to find out how to configure Automatic Updates by using Group Policy or registry settings.
See also Q241783 and Q312955 for errors Using Windows Update though a proxy server or firewall.
The cause is inability for the Automatic Updates service to get out through HTTPS (port 443) to the MS Update server. Enable the port and all automatic updates will start working.
Personally I think you should call Billy and abuse him and suggest he supply you with the latest gear for causing you such grief, it's just not cricket
Have you tried using Automatic Updates Clients 2.2 or higher ?
Each client must be running Automatic Updates client version 2.2 or higher. In order for your clients to have access to the updates that you approve, you must configure Automatic Updates client to point to the URL for the Software Update Services server.
